Talking Points
Contrary to the “ditching Taiwan” policy option, Taiwan, an important military and trade partner of the U.S. in the Asia Pacific, has recently returned to the radar screen of the U.S. after President Trump’s inauguration. A significant puzzle in Taiwan-U.S. relations nowadays is why it appears that President Trump has stressed Taiwan’s remarkable arms purchases from the U.S. and been inclined to play the “Taiwan card” to bargain with mainland China, while putting little emphasis on Taiwan’s democratic achievements and shared value with the U.S. What would it mean if President Trump and his key staff in national security, foreign policy, and international trade continue to deal with U.S. relations with Taiwan from such a very realistic perspective? What is the prospect of Taiwan-U.S. relations?
On February 24, from 4:00 pm to 5:50 pm, the Washington-basedInstitute of Taiwan-American Studies (ITAS) and the Taipei-based Center for Foreign Policy Studies (CFPS) at National Chengchi University College of International Affairs, joined by the Grassroots Diplomacy Council of Taiwan Benevolent Association of America, will host a policy panel of experts to scrutinize the above-mentioned questions in the era of greater unpredictability resulting from Taiwan, the U.S., and mainland China. To be moderated by Quansheng Zhao of American University School of International Service, this panel will consist of Eric B. Brown, Hudson Institute’s Senior Fellow and specialist on East Asia, Kwei-Bo Huang, National Chengchi University (NCCU) professor and former Chairman of the Research and Planning Committee of R.O.C. Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as well as Tony S. Kuo, Dean of International Office at Shih Chien University and former Chairman of KMT’s National Development Institute.
